RPM completed its second 24 hour race in
the second running of the Toyo Tyres 24 hours of Dubai held over the 10th, 11th
and 12th of January. The team travelled to Dubai with a host of front running
Radical racers in the form of Nick Foster, John Stanley, Robert Simpson and RPM
GT regular Peter Bamford. They also took RPM driver Alex Mortimer as a reserve
in case of emergency.
The weekend didn't get off to a great start with a
water pipe clip breaking immediately at the start of practice stranding the car
out on track as driving it back to the pits without enough coolant may have
risked damaging the engine. This meant the drivers only got 3 laps each of
practice to learn the track before day qualifying.
Qualifying saw the
RPM car launch its way to 7th on the 80 strong grid which included some 28
Porsches. This was a great boost for the team due to the lack of running they
had received so far in the weekend.
Night qualifying was to see the RPM
car move its way upto 4th overall only trailing Uwe Alzen in GT2 Porsche and
the factory Red Bull BMW's of Duller Motorsport.
The race was started
at 2pm on the Friday afternoon. From the off the RPM car looked competitive
holding itself inside the top 10 for the opening 7 hours until an unfortunate
bump in the night whilst working its way through traffic saw it lose 90 minutes
in the pits being repaired, dropping the car to 59th overall. A sterling effort
by the RPM drivers and great pit work by the team over the next 15 1/2 hours
saw the car climb its way back to 28th overall.
RPM now has unfinished
business at the Dubai 24 and will be back!
