| RPM do the
double at Thruxton |
|
The 6th round of the Radical Great and
British Championship moved to the ultra fast Thruxton circuit last weekend.
With Nigel Redwood in second place in the championship and rapidly closing the
gap to the championship leaders after a double win and lap record at
Silverstone along with team mate Alex Mortimer the pairing were keen to keep
the momentum rolling.
From the moment the cars rolled onto the circuit
for the Saturday morning test it was clear the RPM car was the class of the SR3
field setting fastest time. Qualifying saw car 31 of Redwood and Mortimer end
up 2nd on the grid for race 1 and pole for race 2 with fellow RPM driver Henry
Fletcher putting his SR3 5th in class.
Race 1 saw Redwood start car 31
immediately pulling a sizeable lead before the handover to team mate Alex
Mortimer who pushed for the initial part of his stint allowing him to set a new
lap record of 1m 12.9 s at an average speed of 116.25 mph. The team then
cruised to its 3rd win on the trot. Henry Fletcher however had had his
strongest race of the year to date running in second in class for the duration
of the race before slipping back at the end to 5th.
Race 2 saw much the
same pattern emerge. After a poor start from Mortimer, slipping back to 3rd in
class, he clawed his way back to the lead and pulled a gap to hand over to
Redwood. The race however took a turn after the pitstops when the safety car
was brought out for incident to be cleared up. This ment Redwood lost any lead
he had to the pack and gave way to a 2 lap dash to the line which fortunately
Nigel stayed on top for taking the pairings fourth win in a row, and second lap
record in row as well as further diminishing Ben Devlin and James Richardson's
Championship Lead. Henry Fletcher took another solid 5th.
James Saggers
RPM's Biduro ace was on normal form, qualifying on pole with team mates Stoney
and Ferguson 7th and 9th. The luck however was not to run for Saggers in race 1
with an early spin dropping him down the order. He recovered back to 10th
place. This left Chris Stoney to carry the RPM torch which he did convincingly
taking a 4th place finish with fellow RPM driver Andy Ferguson taking his best
finish of the season in 7th. Race 2 saw Saggers net himself another Podium and
fastest lap and Andy Ferguson claim another solid top 10 finish. <<
